DEF 4522P - Craft of Problem Solving |

Learning Objectives: The modern problem solver and the five elements of effective thinking; Statistical thinking and how it is related to problem solving; A formal introduction to systems engineering conceptual design and how it is a sound methodology for model-based problem solving; An overview of the seven management and planning tools for building rigorous, qualitative models; Tools and techniques learned in the class through two case studies. Required Materials: Each student will need to bring a laptop computer with internet access and a modern wed browser for the two case studies. Technical Requirements: Participants will receive the course slides in bound hard copy, a CD containing PDFs of the course slides, other support materiel and software. Copies of “Modeling for Insight” and “The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking” are also provided to give the students additional reading material outside of class. |
