Learning Objectives: -read both simplified and unsimplified passages of approximately 500-600 words that contain idiomatic and academic vocabulary, complex grammar structures, and a wide range of signal words at a rate of at least 150 words per minute; -continue developing reading skills such as main idea, skimming, and scanning while identifying implied facts and hypothesizing conclusions about class readings; -categorize critical from non-critical vocabulary in reading passages; -demonstrate the use of dictionaries for language learning; -determine vocabulary meaning through context analysis and identify word meaning by decoding word parts with little reliance on a dictionary; -demonstrate familiarity with the format of standardized tests; and -summarize general ideas and express opinions related to readings in both written and spoken English as well as ask and answer relevant questions in both small and large discussion group formats.
