Learning Objectives: Reading Objectives: • Recognize rhetorical structure, purpose, and tone of texts across different genres (historical texts, personal narratives, research articles, graphic novels, and poetry) • Produce reading notes and create outlines that accurately summarize the main ideas and key details of a text • Recognize the writer’s purpose, tone, and style, and evaluate the writer’s argument for validity and bias • Use critical thinking skills to compare/contrast, distinguish fact from opinion, and synthesize information from various sources • Respond to a text through oral and written analysis and answer questions based on the ideas presented. • Participate in academic discussion in both small and large groups Writing Objectives • Write essays of varying lengths using correct organization, grammar, coherence, and synthesis of supporting ideas • Write research papers and expository essays that correctly summarize academic texts in order to answer a focused research question • Locate credible, valid sources that provide information about a focused research question • Develop the ability to avoid plagiarism by correctly citing sources of information in APA style • Write reflectively and incorporate personal experiences to compose a narrative Required Materials: None Technical Requirements: None |
